Mount Rinjani, an active volcano on the island of Lombok, Indonesia, is a popular and challenging destination for trekkers from around the world. There are several routes to the summit, each offering a unique experience and level of difficulty. The two most well-known and frequently used routes are from Sembalun and Senaru. Other, less common routes include Torean, Timbanuh, and Aik Berik.
For those with their sights set on reaching the 3,726-meter peak of Mount Rinjani, the Sembalun route is the recommended choice. This route, starting from the east, is known for being the most direct path to the summit.
Starting Point: The trek begins at the Rinjani Information Center in Sembalun village, at an elevation of about 1,100 meters.
The Trail: The initial part of the trek is a gentle ascent through a vast and scenic savanna, which can be quite exposed to the sun. The trail becomes progressively steeper as you approach the crater rim. The most challenging section is the final push to the Plawangan Sembalun (the Sembalun crater rim), which involves a steep climb.
The Summit Attack: Trekkers typically camp at the Plawangan Sembalun campsite (2,639 meters) and begin their final ascent to the summit around 2 or 3 AM. This is the most strenuous part of the trek, involving a difficult climb on loose volcanic scree for about 3-4 hours to catch the sunrise from the peak.
Best For: Fit and experienced trekkers who are determined to conquer the summit.
The Senaru route, approaching from the north, is a popular choice for those who want to experience the beauty of the crater lake and the lush rainforest environment of the national park, without necessarily aiming for the summit.
Starting Point: The trek begins in Senaru village, at a lower elevation of around 600 meters.
The Trail: The trail starts with a long and steady climb through a dense tropical rainforest. This shaded path offers a chance to see a variety of flora and fauna, including the black-tufted langur monkeys. The trail becomes steeper and more open as you get closer to the Plawangan Senaru (the Senaru crater rim).
The Crater Rim: From the Plawangan Senaru (2,641 meters), you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the crater lake, Segara Anak, and the new volcanic cone, Gunung Barujari. While it’s possible to descend to the lake from this point, the path is very steep and challenging.
Best For: Trekkers of a moderate fitness level who are more interested in the scenery of the crater rim and the rainforest than reaching the summit.
Relatively new as an official route, the Torean trail has long been used by locals for spiritual pilgrimages. It offers a very different experience from the other routes.
The Trail: This route follows a river valley, passing by waterfalls and hot springs. It’s a more gradual and less physically demanding climb to the crater lake.
Best For: Those looking for a more relaxed and scenic trek with a focus on natural beauty and cultural significance. It is often used as a descent route for those who have summited via Sembalun.
Aik Berik: Also from the south, this is another less common route, offering a challenging trek through dense forest.
Fitness: Regardless of the route, trekking Mount Rinjani is a strenuous undertaking. A good level of physical fitness is essential.
Best Time to Climb: The best time to trek is during the dry season, from April to December. The park is often closed during the rainy season (January to March) due to safety concerns.
Leave No Trace: Mount Rinjani is a national park and a sacred place. It is crucial to respect the environment and the local culture by packing out all of your trash and following the principles of Leave No Trace.
